Acrylic drip art painting in rainbow colours

This painting is a delicious blend of hard edges, no frills black expressive movements on one side and a playful, joyous expression of fresh colours on the the other. One of the great benefits of painting onto polycarbonate sheets is that you can paint both sides and consequently display both sides, depending on which way round you like to view it. The picture above shows the black applications on the reverse – as you scroll down the page you’ll see the black side outermost, allowing you to make a comparison between the two. I used industrial grade high gloss enamel paints on this painting and in particular, the black side shows some really striking and solid applications that send your eye into a cascade of twists and turns.

Bold stroke work on one side, clever contrasting of colour and striking marbling effects on the other all converge to produce a truly stunning and unique piece of art. I arranged the colours in such a way as to add composure and space to the piece – allowing you to take a breath whilst you take it all in. The finality of the black is in perfect contrast to the happiness of the accent colours.

Below you can see the piece turned to show the black applications facing forward. Showing the painting this way round adds a completely different perspective to the way you see it. It has now become strong and powerful – using the authority of the black to shape and define it. I think that this way round adds a powerful intensity to the painting.
Mounted on chromium spacers (supplied) this piece sits away from the surface of the wall allowing light to pass through the gaps in the paint, casting intricate and cohesive patterns on the wall behind – always changing, always moving, thanks to the relative changes in the movement of natural light.

This particular piece measures 1000mm x 1000mm x 10mm. It was painted in seven shades of paint using a controlled pouring method I have perfected. Each of the paints was thinned to achieve a characteristically dense but even flowing consistency. The application methods have resulted in a fluid and liquid finish to the piece, offering a glossy and reflective surface on which to look upon. It’s heavy too –  which makes this piece feel substantial.
