The Great Man

The Great Man was painted with industrial quality enamel and gloss paints. He measures 127cm x 86cm and is painted onto an 8mm piece of MDF (medium density particle board). He was then mounted to a recessed white solid wood frame. The Great Man is ready to hang.

Out of all the drip art I have done recently this has to be my favourite – both in terms of its colour scheme and it’s incredibly complex composition. I’m not kidding when I say that this painting took a long time to get right, requiring several repaints during the course of his early days. The result is a spectacular blend of pure-Pollock and my own technique and , as the name of the painting suggests, is an homage to the great man.

I got as close as I could to the paints he used to use and also in keeping with some of his famous works – painted onto a rigid board. This has some unique properties over canvas – most notably that of porosity. A sealed and more dense surface allows me to build layers up in a different and more dramatic way than on canvas, something you can see from the close up shots. There is a huge amount of paint on this piece and thanks to it’s wear capabilities, can be touched and rubbed without fear of damage. The resplendent and subtle tones of this framed piece can only really be appreciated when you see it in the flesh – so to help you appreciate that I have put 9 photos in the gallery for you to look at. Oh, and it’s heavy too – weighing in at 11kg’s.
