Wow! What can I say about this explosion of colour and shape? It’s loud, big, heavy and in your face. However, it is balanced and serene and thanks to the gentle arcs and curves is also very fluid. What I mean by that is that the painting is moving as you look at it. I have carefully painted the large arcs to convey a sense of motion which I felt was essential in helping to soften the very staccato-like applications that form the in between layers. I have used Day-Glo® branded fluorescent paints in some areas of the painting – not only to add a little ‘wow’ to the colour scheme but also to tempt you into seeing it lit up with an ultra-violet tube. The addition of a strong orange has complimented the deep blues beautifully.
For this painting I exclusively used acrylic based paints. The piece measures 250cm x 122cm and is approximately 50mm deep so this is quite a substantial piece of art.
I seldom use brushes on any of my work as I prefer to use rags, sponges, spatulas and other household utensils. Brushes are so last year!
In my own opinion this piece of art is not the most technically challenging I have done but it is one of the most unusual. Partly down to the audacity of the colour schemes which really shouldn’t work but do. This was painted over the course of a week in my life that presented itself with it’s own unique set of challenges and hurdles. I think the painting reflects much of that. I won through and so did the piece – it is a triumph of persistence and patience.
