This piece has probably taken the longest to get right out of all the paintings I have done recently. I think this is possibly the third incarnation of this painting that I can remember. I tend to go with an idea and if it doesn’t work I cover it up and try something else some time later on. This particular piece has been a work-in-progress for about eight months or so. I am at a point where I am finally happy with it.
Unusually for me the painting features some extreme textures thanks to the use of a synthetic black medium that I have stuck to the surface then painted over several times. In some areas the density of this medium is extreme causing a series of mountain like peaks across the canvas. You can see what I mean in the some of the close up shots. I have used enamel, gloss, acrylic, oil and glow in the dark paints on this piece. In fact there’s not much I haven’t used! You may think that would contribute to disaster but you would be wrong. Sure, the painting is busy and complicated but it is also a bold statement, a single mass and something a little different from most abstracts. This painting has a history and I think that shows in the finished piece. It weighs a ton (not literally) and I could see it looking amazing on a white wall somewhere.
This particular piece measures 1000mm x 1000mm x 38mm.
