Bolt from the Blue

Abstract drip art painting by Seb Farrington

I am always intrigued by what I can do with colour and shape, I guess that’s why we paint. I love pushing the boundaries of what the brain can cope with. Occasionally I put together combinations of tones that really shouldn’t belong with each other – especially if you were to follow the traditional colour matching principles. Fortunately I long since abandoned those and prefer to use my own judgment about blending tones and hues. I believe that this is an in-built ability and cannot be taught. So here we have just such an example. Bold green and red mixed with peach and grey and blue – try finding those on your colour wheel!

As you move closer into the painting you can begin to pick out all the intricate detailing I have included.  These pictures reveal such a small part of the painting but represent the astonishing complexity of the paint and how it has been applied to the canvas. I painted this piece over four days allowing certain parts to dry whilst others I did not. In an unusual step for me I abandoned the principal of balance and uniformity and went for something a little more maverick.

Lightning Storm, Magnetic Fields – put in as much or as little imagery as you like. The beauty of abstractism is it’s ability to conjure emotions and feelings in an instant without looking for a hidden meaning which is not there to begin with. When you see a field of poppies you don’t look any deeper than the visual, so do the same with abstracts and you’ll appreciate them a whole lot more.
