Well, personally, there is a lot of action and momentum in this piece. The feeling form standing away from it is one of happiness – this is in part down to the strong use of bold colours and defined stroke work. A whimsical lightness to the opposing dripped areas create a dance-like movement on the canvas that never fails to pull you in for a closer look. There is some very intricate detailing in this painting which ahs taken a lot of effort to get right. I paint lots of small, fine details into each painting – something has become a recognisable sign of my work. I don’t believe in not putting effort into the small things – to miss that out is a sin. I want you to get involved with your painting – always finding something new to see, something fresh to look at.
There are a complex and surprising number of colours in this piece – most of which were blended on the canvas (this is my preferred method of mixing rather than use a palette). As a result you get to see the most beautiful array of subtle hues and tones.
This particular piece measures 1220mm x 1220mm x 38mm. It was painted using industrial grade enamel paint, each of which was thinned to achieve a characteristically dense but even flowing consistency. The application methods have resulted in a fluid and liquid finish to the piece, offering a glossy and reflective surface on which to look upon. The canvas was painted on the floor then wrapped around a seasoned timber frame, so the painting wraps around the edges.
